Juan Mata officially most prolific Premier League midfielder since 2011/12

With 31 goals and 34 assists to his name, no midfielder has been more prolific than Juan Mata in the Premier League since he moved there in 2011/12.

At Chelsea, the Spanish midfielder did so well he was named their Player of the Year for two years in succession and during that time, Manchester United fans knew all too well just how dangerous he could be.

At Man United, Mata wasn’t cooking on gas straight away yet slowly but surely has began to blossom and he peaked at Anfield on Sunday with a wonderful, spectacular, magnificent brace to sink Liverpool in their own back yard.

Mata’s lack of defensive capabilities saw Jose Mourinho get rid of him and under Louis van Gaal that same issue seemed to hinder his progress but since the 4-3-3 formation now has its rightful place, Mata has found his position in the team.

Juan Mata was very good,” van Gaal said after the full-time whistle on Sunday.

“He played always good in my opinion with me so he’s one of my most constantly playing players but sometimes you also need balance in your team and you have to select other players. Now he has played very well and did this position very well.”

Finally, it all seems to be clicking into place for Mata to the point where his form has been so electric that United are building their performances around him. He’s no longer a passenger, he’s the pilot.

Against Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool, Mata was the driving force at the wheel of a United train which is gathering momentum in the rat race and with upcoming games against both Chelsea and Manchester City, fans are hoping his purple patch continues into and beyond April.
