Paul Scholes: Signing Gareth Bale will make Manchester United title contenders

Paul Scholes believes Gareth Bale would be a ‘perfect fit’ at Manchester United if he decided to move from Real Madrid in the summer.

The Welshman is enduring a tough time of it right now with the current European champions and the latest incident in Spain included fans attacking his car after the defeat against Barcelona in the El Clasico.

Bale, who has a £75m release clause, has had a fantastic impact at Madrid and was central in their Champions League winning campaign but speaking about Man United in his latest column for the Evening Standard, Scholes talked up his potential move to Old Trafford.

“My feeling is that he would be perfect for Manchester United,” he said.

“Of course, as a fan of my former club I would like to see him there but, looking at it objectively, I always felt that Bale was a natural fit for United as he developed at Tottenham from a left-back into one of the best attacking footballers in the country

“He would be loved at Old Trafford. In return I believe he could turn Louis van Gaal’s team into serious title contenders next season. In my years at United I witnessed some signings who, over their careers, transformed the fortunes of the team.

“From Eric Cantona when I was an apprentice, to Dwight Yorke, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Wayne Rooney. These were great footballers who became great United players. Bale has the potential to make as much of an impact as any of them.”

Bale couldn’t ask for any higher praise than having his potential compared to King Eric and it’s clear how much of a fan Scholes is of the winger.

As Scholes touches on, Bale’s treatment by the fans and press is acidic and although he spent so long in the Premier League, he never won anything with Spurs.

With so much transition still going on at the club it really isn’t outside the realms of possibility that Bale arrives and Angel di Maria departs, given his slow start at United, but it does of course depend on Madrid selling in the first place.
