Manchester United defender Chris Smalling wants to stay at Old Trafford despite rumoured interest from Arsenal.

Reports last week suggested that Arsene Wenger was lining up a £12m for Smalling, who is nearing the final year of his contract at Man United.

Fans may have been indifferent about the news earlier in the campaign but a resurgence in form has made the 25-year-old a crucial part of Louis van Gaal’s side in recent weeks.

Smalling dismissed speculation over his future and insisted he is enjoying his time at United.

Speaking about the reports linking him to Arsenal, Smalling said: “That’s one that I’ve not even discussed with anyone. It’s a case of the manager showing his faith in me and if I’m playing I’m happy. We’ve got another eight games to finish as strongly as we can.

“Yeah, I do. I’m enjoying it, I’ve always enjoyed playing for United, especially at the minute. I’m happy to stay for as long as they want me.

When asked if he was negotiating a new contract at United, Smalling said: “Not that I’m aware of, I don’t really take care of that.”

Fans will be happy to hear of Smalling’s commitment to the club given his good recent form.

After a difficult start to the season in which he was in and out the team due to injury, the Englishman has really pushed on under van Gaal. Against Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool, Smalling was superb defensively and he even displayed an excellent range of passing. Van Gaal will be hoping he emerges unscathed from England’s game against Italy on Tuesday.
