FIFA misquote Mats Hummels on saying he only wants to join Manchester United

by Sam Peoples

Mats Hummels has long been linked with a move to Manchester United and quotes run by today from the Borussia Dortmund captain say he is only interested in moving to Old Trafford if he leaves Borussia Dortmund.

The 26-year-old is widely considered one of the best centre-backs in Europe and with Louis van Gaal on the lookout for a new defender, Hummels’ name is one which has been thrown into the mixer.

Now, quotes published by from Hummels make the clearest indication yet that the Dortmund captain would like a move to Old Trafford.

“If I was to transfer abroad at some stage, then it would only be to Manchester United,” Hummels is reported to have said.

Update: It seems that have had a massive faux pas with this Hummels story.

The ‘quotes’ in question were nothing more than a paraphrased section from Bild and not direct quotes from Hummels himself. Furthermore, it was in reference to something said back in 2012 rather than today.

The Telegraph also ran with the same quotes from Hummels so the FIFA article has certainly caused a ripple effect.

It’s poor from FIFA to have made such an error and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Hummels and/or his representatives release a statement clarifying the situation.
