‘Operation De Gea’ underway in Real Madrid

by Sam Peoples

Unless David de Gea signs a new contract before the transfer window opens, this summer is going to be a repeat of 2008/9 and Cristiano Ronaldo’s long drawn out saga with Real Madrid.

Reports began linking De Gea with a move back to his home back in 2014 and his continued improvement to the point where he is now considered one of the world’s best goalkeepers means they are only getting stronger.

Now, Spanish newspaper AS are reporting ‘Operation De Gea’ is already underway, the ‘first movements’ towards signing him have already taken place and that, regardless of what happens this summer, Madrid will continue to chase the goalkeeper who United value at €68m.

They go on to suggest De Gea is chuffed with Madrid’s and wants to return to Spain. Given that he was born in the Spanish capital, you can understand his desire to move at some point in his career and interest from one of the world’s biggest clubs will please any player, regardless of their situation. So in that sense, there’s nothing new in these claims.

Something that is new is the mention of signing Petr Cech as an alternative. That’s a brilliant idea, probably the best idea Madrid have ever had and they should definitely follow through on that, just leave De Gea alone.

Ronaldo was always going to leave for Madrid, it was his dream after all, but can the same thing be said about De Gea or would his history with Atletico stop that from happening? Unlikely.

There’s a general consensus among United fans that De Gea will indeed end up moving back to Madrid but nobody is prepared to let that happen this summer and for all the talks about new signings, making sure De Gea stays at the club is the single most important bit of business Ed Woodward can do this year.
