Chelsea plan to hijack Manchester United’s move for Mats Hummels – report

Chelsea have joined the race to sign Borussia Dortmund captain Mats Hummels and are prepared to meet his £37m asking price.

According to the Mirror, Chelsea view Hummels as a long-term replacement for John Terry.

The German World Cup winner has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United in recent weeks after Dortmund officials admitted he could move away from the Westfalenstadion in the summer.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is also said to be keeping his eye on the situation as it develops. If Chelsea fail to land Hummels in the summer, Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane is another defender on their wanted list.

United have long been linked with Hummels and the 26-year-old is reportedly one of van Gaal’s top summer transfer targets. He may even end up signing a new contract at Dortmund after officials expressed their desire to keep him at the club earlier this week.

United have lost out on players to Chelsea in the past but given the necessity for a world class defender in the squad, at a time where there are very few available, would certainly be a blow if van Gaal wanted to sign him.
