Spanish football expert Guillem Balague believes Manchester United will have to pay Nicolas Otamendi’s full £38.2m buy-out clause if they want to bring him to Old Trafford.
Man United made a £27m bid for the Valencia defender in January as they looked to expand their options but it was eventually rejected. Instead, Victor Valdes turned out to be United’s only signing of the winter transfer window.
Balague expects Louis van Gaal to go back in for Otamendi in the summer but expects Valencia to ask for more money from United.
Speaking about Otamendi, Balague said: “Valencia think that Manchester United will pay the £38.2 million buy-out clause in the summer for Nicolas Otamendi.
“United have already offered £27 million and Valencia think they’ll improve on that offer, so the club are preparing for it.”
Otamendi is undoubtedly a quality player and one that would improve United’s back line but paying close to £40m for him is a mighty big outlay for any player, let alone a defender.
Unfortunately, it is no secret that United have money to spend and that is bound to inflate transfer fees for any potential targets as a result. Nothing beats the United tax.
