Wayne Rooney: Manchester derby a massive game of pride

Wayne Rooney is determined to help Manchester United fans win back some pride over their Manchester City counterparts with a win in the derby on Sunday.

The Manchester derby is always a huge game but this weekend’s clash takes on added importance as United bid to finish in the top four of the Premier League.

United have won five games in a row while City suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Crystal Palace on Monday night but in the derby, United have succumbed to four straight defeats which Rooney wants to change.

Rooney wants to give United fans bragging rights after the game by inflicting a heavy defeat on their noisy neighbours.

When asked about what the derby means to him, Rooney said: ”I think it’s a very important game for Manchester United and Manchester City… for the fans and, for me, it’s a massive game of pride. You play for Man United, you want to win these derby games.

“We want to give United fans something to smile about when they go to work on Monday morning, we want them to be the ones to be able to give out the banter to Manchester City fans at work.”

The game is a huge one not only for fans in the city of Manchester but also for those around the world.

A win could set up United well in the Champions League ‘rat race’, as Louis van Gaal likes to call it, while at the same time providing another dent in City’s faltering season.

There is a real confidence surrounding Old Trafford that the team can get all three points, largely due to the sensational form of players such as Juan Mata and Ander Herrera. However, it is important to remember that anything can happen in the derby.
