Fans’ view: Who has been Manchester United’s Player of the Year apart from De Gea?

by Ben Topliss

There is absolutely no question whatsoever that David de Gea has been Manchester United’s Player of the Season so far.

However, leave the Spaniard out, and picking out United’s standout player suddenly becomes a lot more difficult.

Marouane Fellaini, Ashley Young, Wayne Rooney, Ander Herrera and Daley Blind all have credible shouts, as do the likes of Marcos Rojo and Antonio Valencia.

We asked our Twitter followers for their opinion on who has stood out for United when De Gea is taken out of the equation:

In terms of pure consistency, Fellaini and Blind have to be up there as they have gone about their jobs with a minimum of fuss this season.

Carrick would also be in the mix in that respect but injuries have meant his time on the pitch has been limited.

When it comes to making an impact on games, Herrera and Rooney will have reason to believe they deserve the accolade. Herrera, in particular, has probably been United’s best player since the start of the year.

But where does that leave Young, Smalling, Rojo and even Juan Mata? It is an extremely difficult one to narrow down and it is unlikely fans will get a definitive answer unless someone at the club really steps it up in the final few games of the season. Regardless, the debate shows that a large majority of the players of the club have all contributed to a positive season at United.
