Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal confident of derby victory

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal is in confident mood ahead of this weekend’s clash against Manchester City.

Manuel Pellegrini’s side are on a downward spiral having lost three of their last five games in the Premier League.

Meanwhile, Man United have won five on the bounce and have leapfrogged City to third place in the table.

Van Gaal is full of confidence heading into the match but insisted City’s poor form will not have an impact on the game.

Speaking about the derby, van Gaal said: ”I am always confident, because I always believe in my team. In our gameplan.

“There are not so many differences in that, because I know that also a match between teams of the same city is always very special, and in spite of that City lost several games in the last few, I don’t think that shall have a big influence.”

It is a pragmatic stance by van Gaal but he will know that United’s sky-high confidence will give them an edge when the two sides meet at Old Trafford.

Players such as Ander Herrera, Juan Mata, Marouane Fellaini and Ashley Young are in the form of their lives at United, leading to a fresh wave of optimism about the club.

City are currently in a slump and also have to contend with a question mark over the fitness of captain Vincent Kompany. Fans will know that anything can happen in a derby but United could not be in a better position heading into it.
