Robin van Persie back from injury but faces uncertain Man United future

by Ben Topliss

Manchester United striker Robin van Persie may be ready and raring to go after returning to training this week but his place in Louis van Gaal’s starting XI is far from certain.

Prior to his ankle injury, which he picked up in the 2-1 defeat to Swansea City back in February, the Dutchman’s performances had become increasingly ineffectual.

His absence from the team was seen as a blessing in disguise for many fans as it allowed Wayne Rooney to move back up front following a number of weeks spent in midfield.

Rooney has since flourished and he grabbed another goal in last weekend’s 3-1 victory over Aston Villa.

The move has also allowed Ander Herrera to really make a mark in midfield. If van Gaal was to bring van Persie back into the side, it would threaten to derail United’s good momentum.

Regardless, van Gaal has a policy of making his players feature for the U21s in order to prove their fitness before they can make a return for the first-team.

Whether or not he will make van Persie do the same remains to be seen, especially given the fact he seems to have a soft spot for his striker following their work together at the 2014 World Cup with the Dutch national team.
