Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany an injury doubt for derby

by Richard Laverty

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini has revealed Vincent Kompany is an injury doubt ahead of his side’s clash against Manchester United on Sunday.

The Belgian skippered his side against Crystal Palace on Monday night but he could not prevent a 2-1 defeat, a result which left them one point behind Man United in the Premier League.

As well as Kompany, City will be without Stevan Jovetic and Wilfried Bony with muscular and knee injuries, respectively.

Dedryck Boyata is also out but Pellegrini insisted his squad has enough depth to be able to cope without them.

Speaking about Kompany, Pellegrini said: ”We’ll see tomorrow if he can play or not. It’s better with Kompany but if he can’t play, we have a squad.”

Without Kompany, Pellegrini will likely partner Martin Demichelis with Eliaquim Mangala against United at Old Trafford.

Demichelis has been mediocre this season while Mangala is widely considered one of the worst signings City have made in recent memory. Kompany’s absence will give United, and Wayne Rooney in particular, a big boost ahead of the game. Rooney is in lethal form and will be more than confident of getting a goal or two in the match.
