David de Gea earns spot in Gary Neville’s Team of the Year

by Richard Laverty

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has named his team of the season for 2014/15, and it includes just one red shirt, David de Gea.

Despite United’s now lofty position in the league and almost certainty of a return to the Champions League, there haven’t been many outstanding, consistent performers at Old Trafford this season.

Record signing Angel Di Maria was writing his own headlines at the start of the season but that has been the story for many players this season.

Di Maria’s form his dipped dramatically since then whilst fellow new signing Ander Herrera couldn’t impose himself on the team due to Louis van Gaal‘s reluctant nature towards the Spaniard.

Daley Blind has also been impressive but struggled with the injuries and the same goes for new defender Marcos Rojo. Juan Mata has shone in recent weeks but he too had large spells of the season on the bench.

Captain Wayne Rooney probably has the best case for inclusion given he is once again the club’s top scorer despite spending three months playing in midfield when the likes of Herrera and Carrick were either injured or not deemed worthy of selection.

But De Gea has been the most consistent and top performer throughout the season, regularly making several superb saves in matches and winning the team games on his own.

Whilst it still remains unclear whether or not he’ll be at Old Trafford next season, there isn’t a goalkeeper in the country more deserving of a spot in the team this season.
