Robson believes Carrick and Rooney are crucial for the Manchester derby

Bryan Robson believes Michael Carrick is going to be crucial for Manchester United in the derby against City.

Man United’s resurgent form has coincided with Carrick’s return to fitness on two occasions this season and now that he looks to have put his injury problems behind him, Carrick is showing the sort of form which earned him a place in the PFA Team of the Year back in 2013/14.

Having Carrick in the side gives the likes of Ander Herrera and Juan Mata more creative freedom which has no doubt helped with their improved performances as well.

Robson feels the performances of Rooney and Carrick will dictate whether United come away with three points from the game.

“I feel that Michael, along with Wayne Rooney of course, will have to be right on form for us to win the game,” Robson told

“Michael’s got to have an impact on what Toure does for them.

“When you look at City, they’ve got Sergio Aguero and Toure as their key men, so it’s very similar [to us with Rooney and Carrick] and very well balanced,” he added. “For me, it’s who plays the best out of those four that could make the difference.”

Daley Blind was excellent in the holding midfield role earlier this season but Carrick’s influence goes is more encompassing than the Dutchman’s in that he brings the best out of those around him too.

At 33, Carrick is coming towards the twilight of his career but if his form so far this season when fit is anything to go by, he won’t be leaving the first-team any time soon.
