Louis van Gaal: Ashley Young was my Man of the Match against Manchester City

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has chosen Ashley Young as his Man of the Match following the 4-2 win over Manchester City on Sunday.

Young was excellent from start to finish at Old Trafford and grabbed Man United’s vital equaliser after Sergio Aguero had opened the scoring.

The 29-year-old then set up Marouane Fellaini and Chris Smalling as United sealed a hugely encouraging three points.

Van Gaal was delighted with Young’s contribution but also reserved praise for Fellaini.

Speaking after the game, van Gaal said: “Ashley was Man of the Match and I think that was right. If I had to choose, I would have chosen him.

“Also Fellaini is very important in our game-plan and I’m very pleased that he plays for Manchester United and no-one else.”

Often ridiculed last season, Young has enjoyed a remarkable turnaround at United. The Englishman is keeping Angel di Maria, a £60m club record signing from Real Madrid, out of the starting XI, which goes to show just how much of an impression he has made on van Gaal.

As well as Young, Juan Mata and Fellaini are also enjoying fantastic runs in the team. Their improvement has been incredible and they rightly deserve all of the plaudits which are coming their way.
