Gary Cahill: Chelsea will have a game plan for Marouane Fellaini

Gary Cahill has revealed Chelsea will have a game plan in place to combat Manchester United’s in-form midfielder Marouane Fellaini.

The Belgian has been influential in United’s rise into third place and Liverpool, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur all failed to quash his threat.

Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville believe Jose Mourinho could use Kurt Zouma in midfield to combat Fellaini and while Cahill didn’t go into specifics, he did make it clear Chelsea have taken Fellaini into account.

“We’ll have a game plan [to battle] against Marouane Fellaini’s strengths,” Cahill told talkSPORT.

“We all know he adds a different dimension to Manchester United’s game.

“If the game turns out [so] they can have a lot possession, they can play like that. If they need to go direct, they can do that as well.

“He’s not just a target man though, he’s dangerous in the box. There will be battles all over the pitch on Saturday.”

The thing about Fellaini is that it doesn’t really matter if Chelsea have a game plan to try and stop him. If the likes of Juan Mata and Ander Herrera can float balls towards him at the back post, more often than not he will get his bouffant on the end of it.

What works in United’s favour here is the fact they are not reliant at all on Fellaini at the moment. He is in-form but so are the likes of Herrera, Mata and Carrick and even if Fellaini is shackled, it should open up more space for others.

Fellaini going to Stamford Bridge as a marked man is testament to how much he has improved and fans are hoping he can keep climbing on the upward curve he has been on ever since scoring away at West Brom all those months ago.
