Ander Herrera was asked to revert to a much more defensive role as Manchester United visited Chelsea with a defensive injury crisis to rival the early stages of the season.
With Daley Blind, Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo and Michael Carrick ruled out, it appeared at first that Wayne Rooney would play the defensive midfield role, allowing Herrera to continue further up the pitch.
But the tenacity and strength Herrera has shown recently appeared to make him the ideal candidate for the job in Louis van Gaal‘s eyes, and the Spaniard didn’t disappoint.
He wont several 50-50 tackles early in the game, regularly dispossessed Chelsea’s key men and tried to help his side drive forward, much to the joy of supporters who continue to fall in love with the midfielder.

Happy with the way we controlled Chelsea’s midfield without Carrick. Herrera is a gem.

With another tricky game coming up at Everton next week, United fans will want to see Herrera influencing the match further up the field again, but right now, the Spaniard can do little wrong.
Besides the returning Luke Shaw, Herrera was potentially United’s best player despite having to revert to a position he has rarely been asked to play at Old Trafford so far.
