Player Ratings: Chelsea 1-0 Manchester United

by Richard Laverty

David de Gea 5 Had little to do, had a few hairy moments, including a handball outside the box. Will have better days.

Antonio Valencia 6 Did ok down the right, kept the ball well and showed initiative going forward.

Chris Smalling 6 Stepped out of defence with more confidence but could do little to prevent Hazard breezing through for the goal.

Patrick McNair 7 Not a bad return to the team for McNair. Looked assured, happy to drive forward and had two good efforts from range.

Luke Shaw 8 Excellent on his return to action. Regularly showed his pace down the left, was United’s key outlet.

Wayne Rooney 5 Passed well, but couldn’t influence the game during his return to the midfield. Cut a frustrated figure.

Ander Herrera 7 Adapted well to the deeper midfield role, got stuck in and tried to dictate the tempo. Another good performance.

Marouane Fellaini 5 Really couldn’t do what he’s done lately. Struggled to get any hold in the game, looked frustratedt.

Juan Mata 6 Wasn’t at his influential best on his return to Stamford Bridge but had some bright moments. Was subbed for Januzaj.

Ashley Young 6 Like Mata, had a quiet game compared to recent high standards. Linked well with Shaw, was brought off for Di Maria.

Radamel Falcao 5 Looked weak and once again shot of confidence. Hit the post after good work in the second half.

Angel Di Maria 5 Looked lively but struggled to make an impact against a Chelsea side happy to sit back.

Adnan Januzaj 4 Had a tough time of it after coming on. Gave away niggling fouls and didn’t influence any attacks.

Tyler Blackett N/A Late addition for the excellent Shaw, a rare return to the first team.
