Denis Irwin: Luke Shaw is a tremendous player

by Sam Peoples

Denis Irwin knows a thing or two about being a successful left-back at Manchester United.

The Irishman played 529 times for Man United and is widely regarded as one of the best left-backs to have every played for the club.

Earlier this season he gave his support for Shaw by backing him to become a fantastic player for United and speaking ahead of the Chelsea tie at the weekend, Irwin made it clear he felt it was just a lack of consistent game time which is holding Shaw back.

Luke Shaw has had a stop-start season because he’s had a lot of injuries,” Irwin told ManUtd.com.

“I think he just needs a run of games to get up and running. Shaw’s got competition for his place now but he knew that would be the case anyway when he came here.

“He’s got a challenge in front of him but he’s only a young lad. And while he’s not had the season he would have liked because of those injuries, he’ll still learn an awful lot.

“He’s had an unbelievable two years. He broke into Southampton’s side at a really young age, played particularly well to get into the England squad and then played in the World Cup in Brazil.

“So it’s been a whirlwind and he needs to gather his thoughts and go again.

“There’s no doubt he’s a tremendous player – a pacey, modern full-back who likes to attack. I think he’ll be here for many years to come.”

Daley Blind‘s superb form at left-back got fans questioning whether Shaw would get another look in this season but fortunately for him, Blind wasn’t fit enough to play Chelsa and Shaw was given a golden opportunity which he grabbed with both hands.

A ringing endorsement from one of United’s best ever left-backs should fill Shaw with great confidence going into the Everton game and if he is able to build on the positives he created for himself at Stamford Bridge, he will set himself up perfectly for the last few games of this year.

Shaw came with huge pressure on his shoulders having become one of the world’s most expensive teenagers ever when he joined United and so far hasn’t been able to fulfill that price-tag but with a run of games under his belt, Irwin expects him to be fantastic for the club.
