Manchester United looking to agree new deals with Young, De Gea and Jones – report

Manchester United will attempt to tie down David de Gea, Ashley Young and Phil Jones to long-term contracts after agreeing a new deal with defender Chris Smalling, according to the Telegraph.

Smalling has enjoyed a remarkable turnaround under the guidance of Louis van Gaal and was rewarded with a new contract on Tuesday.

The 25-year-old joins Michael Carrick, Paddy McNair, Reece James and Tyler Blackett in committing themselves to Man United.

The club will now make the futures of De Gea, Young and Jones their top priority as all of their contracts are close to expiring.

De Gea’s situation is particularly concerning for fans. Real Madrid have long been linked with a move for the Spaniard and there has been no suggestion from him that he wants to stay at Old Trafford.

Meanwhile, Young and Jones have enjoyed similar improvements in the same way that Smalling has.

Jones is currently injured but Young played a pivotal part in the recent 4-2 win over Manchester City, scoring before setting up two of his team-mates.

There is an observation to make about the Telegraph’s report in that the newspaper didn’t seem to know anything about Smalling’s contract extension before it was announced, which makes it interesting that they now seem to have information on this trio of contracts.
