De Gea has enjoyed a standout campaign at Man United but has so far resisted the club’s efforts to extend his contract, which expires next year.
Real Madrid have long been linked with a move for the Spaniard and The Mirror now suggests several players at United fear that he may well join the European champions in the summer.
If De Gea does leave, United will demand £50m for him or a player-plus-cash deal involving long-term target Gareth Bale.
De Gea is idolised by United fans all over the world and the club are prepared to pay him upwards of £140,000 a week but a new contract has not been forthcoming.
Perhaps the player is waiting to see if United will qualify for the Champions League, which looks increasingly likely following recent wins over the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City.
As far as fans are concerned, tying De Gea down to a new contract is one of the most important deals Ed Woodward has to achieve this summer because goalkeepers of De Gea’s quality, especially at his age, are a rare breed.
