Former Manchester United defender Phil Neville believes the club should make David de Gea’s new contract their no.1 priority ahead of next season.
De Gea has been in sensational form over the course of the campaign, regularly winning United points thanks to some fantastic saves.
The Spaniard’s current deal at Old Trafford expires next year and Real Madrid are said to be keeping a close eye on his situation.
Neville insisted De Gea is world-class and that United cannot afford to let him leave in the summer.
“From when he first came, to how he is now, I don’t think I’ve seen a player develop and improve as quickly as him. I saw with Cristiano (Ronaldo), I saw the development in terms of his performance, his size, his stature and his physique.
“He’s now at the stage where you’d say he’s world-class. He’s winning football games on his own. It’s a flippant thing to say but he really has.
“Last minutes saves against Everton, Hull, Arsenal away – there’s seven or eight occasions where he has won United games which just shows you that he is world-class.”
There is absolutely no doubt over De Gea’s importance to United, with fans and pundits both agreed that he has been the team’s standout performer this season.
The club will obviously be doing all they can behind the scenes to tie down the 24-year-old but the delay, coupled with his silence on the subject, is telling.
On the one hand, he may genuinely want to join Madrid. On the other, he may be waiting to see if United qualify for the Champions League. Fans will be hoping it’s the latter.
