Rooney put in a good shift but fans will not to see him in that position for much longer. The Man United captain has been ruthless up top in recent weeks and makes a much bigger impact on games when in the role.
This may prompt Louis van Gaal to play Angel di Maria in midfield if Carrick and Blind are still out against Everton on Sunday.
Although the Argentine is going through a rough patch, his best displays this season have come from central midfield.
Against Roberto Martinez’s side, van Gaal will want his side to play at a fast pace so Everton do not get a chance to settle on the ball.
Di Maria’s direct style will be perfect for this and it may well earn him a spot in the starting XI as a result. He needs to build up momentum ahead of next season and a good display at Goodison Park would do just that.
