Louis van Gaal happy with Wayne Rooney and Ander Herrera positions

Louis van Gaal now feels Wayne Rooney‘s best position for the team is up front for Manchester United.

Earlier this season, van Gaal used Rooney in a much deeper midfield role as he wasn’t confident with the team’s balance and it coincided with a string of indifferent performances from United’s captain.

Since returning up front, Rooney has been back among the goals for Man United and him playing there has allowed Ander Herrera to play in a more attacking midfield role, something which has also coincided with the Spaniard’s best performances in a United shirt.

“I think Wayne Rooney is now better for the team in the striker’s position,” van Gaal told Sky Sports before the game today.

“I think Herrera is better one line higher up [further forward]. Blind is of course the holding midfielder.”

All year long fans had been calling for Rooney to start up front because it is so obviously still his best position and as for Herrera, he has made himself a key member of the starting XI ever since he has been given the opportunity.

However, neither player had a good day against Everton. Rooney found himself in midfield for the second half after a disappointing first 45 minutes from United which left them 2-0 down and just like so many of his performances there earlier this season, he struggled and got an injury for his troubles at the end. It was a typically poor performance from Rooney in Merseyside.

As for Herrera, he was equally as invisible. In fact, all of United’s team was. After a brilliant run of six consecutive wins, United have now lost two on the bounce and today’s performance was completely devoid of any confidence.
