Herrera, Young and Smalling nominated for Manchester United’s April Player of the Month

Ander Herrera has been nominated alongside Chris Smalling and Ashley Young for Manchester United’s Player of the Month award for April.

The Spanish midfielder played four times for Man United and earned one man of the match performance for his two goal contribution in the 3-1 win over Aston Villa. He also played in an unorthodox, deeper midfield role against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge and although United lost, he was praised for how well he played in an unfamiliar position.

Having already been nominated for the PFA Fans’ Player of the Month, it is a testament to how well Herrera is playing for United at the moment.

Smalling’s nomination is richly deserved as well as the previously maligned defender has really showed his critics how well he can play and Louis van Gaal rewarded him with a new United contract to keep him at the club long-term.

As for Young, his resurrection under van Gaal has been one of the most pleasant surprises of the season and he is now widely considered to be one of the more important players in United’s starting XI.

Although all three, as well as their team-mate, collectively played poorly against Everton at the weekend, United’s form over the last eight games has on the whole been extremely impressive and they deserve the praise they are getting.
