Ronald Koeman sets ten day deadline with Nathaniel Clyne for contract decision

Ronald Koeman has set a deadline by which Nathaniel Clyne has to inform Southampton as to whether he wants to accept their maximum offer.

Clyne is being widely mooted for a summer exit from Southampton and Louis van Gaal‘s Manchester United is widely considered the most likely destination if he were to leave the South coast club.

Southampton are keen to hold onto Clyne and speaking about the current contract situation, Koeman insisted the 24-year-old was very happy at the club but now had to make his decision within the next ten days.

“We’re still speaking with Clyney and his agent, but of course we have to know in 10 days,” Koeman said.

“The club is doing an offer the maximum what we can do and then we expect the player’s answer.

“I’ve spoken to Clyney, he’s very happy and of course there is some interest but nobody has really bid for the player. All the players are happy with how the team is doing.

“But it’s football, you never know. In football if you go in your last season of contract, we don’t like that.”

Given that the season isn’t even over in the next ten days, it’s quite a short deadline from Southampton and it ties into recent reports they are eyeing up replacements for Clyne should he leave the club, as they may well want negotiations to be helped by knowing Clyne’s decision on his future.

Koeman is unlikely to want to sell Clyne to Man United due to his history with van Gaal but money talks in football and with United in the market for a new right-back, there is every chance they will line up with two ex-Southampton academy graduates as their full backs next year.
