Manchester United latest team news and injury round-up

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal had good news and bad news in terms of injury updates during his weekly press conference on Friday.

First of all, van Gaal allayed fears that Wayne Rooney could miss the rest of the season after confirming he will be fit to face West Bromwich Albion on Saturday.

Phil Jones is also available but the defender will have his match rhythm assessed ahead of the clash.

However, Luke Shaw, Jonny Evans, Michael Carrick and Marcos Rojo will all be sidelined due to injury.

The news about Shaw is particularly concerning given the fact that he has only just returned from a hamstring injury which kept him out for a number of weeks.

Carrick’s continued absence is also a worry as United’s midfield made a minimal impact against Everton at Goodison Park last time out.

Meanwhile, Van Gaal confirmed that Robin van Persie will be fit for the match after he scored twice in the U21s victory over Fulham earlier this week. The 31-year-old would have been hoping to start in the absence of Rooney but he may now have to settle for a place on the substitute’s bench.
