Manchester United fans had hoped that the team’s performance against Everton at the end of April was simply a blip.
Prior to the game, United had gone on a hugely impressive six-game winning streak and were unlucky to lose against Premier League leaders Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
Against Everton, United were second best from start to finish and thoroughly deserved their 3-0 defeat.
Supporters went into the West Brom game confident that United could bounce back but their poor form continued at Old Trafford.
Despite dominating possession, United struggled to break down a stubborn Baggies defence and eventually suffered a 1-0 loss.
It was hugely frustrating given United had world-class talent on the pitch in the form of players such as Robin van Persie, Wayne Rooney and Angel di Maria.
The result against West Brom meant United were well and truly dragged back into the race to finish in the top four of the Premier League. If they continue to put in similar displays, they will find it hugely difficult to qualify for the Champions League next season.
