Robin van Persie has been demoted from Manchester United’s first choice penalty taken when fit after his poor miss against West Bromwich Albion at the weekend.
The 31-year-old striker made his return to the starting XI after months on the sidelines and had the opportunity to mark the perfect return with a penalty to draw the game level.
Unfortunately, Van Persie missed the penalty and Man United finished the game 1-0, meaning his penalty miss was vitally important in the defeat and Van Gaal has chosen to remove their responsibilities from his game for the time being.
“It is always [the same],” he added when asked if Van Persie would be taken off penalties after his miss.
“Wayne Rooney has missed also, so when you miss, you are at the bottom again.”
“No. He is now at the end of the road.”
The majority of fans were scratching their head when Van Persie walked up to take the penalty having only just returned to the team, so it came as no surprise to see him miss the important spot-kick and equally so for Van Gaal to be frustrated with the final result.
United worked themselves into an excellent position with six consecutive wins but having now lost three games on the bounce, Van Gaal’s side are dangerously close to slipping back into the top four race.
