Ashley Young set for new Manchester United contract: report

by Sam Peoples

Ashley Young is set to sign a three-year contract with Manchester United at the end of the season, say the Daily Mail.

These are not the first reports that Young will sign a new contract this summer but it is now continuing to gather momentum with the transfers season now only a few weeks from getting underway.

Just like Marouane Fellaini, Young’s resurgence under the stewardship of Louis van Gaal has been spectacularly unexpected and pleasantly surprising.

He has done a great job this season adapting to the left wing-back role and even in the traditional left-back position, Young has shown his versatility which will have endeared him to van Gaal as he is a big fan of multi-functional players.

Young deserves a new deal in the summer based on how important a player he has become to United and although there are some who have reservations about his £120,000 a week contract and long-term prospects, those wage numbers are somewhat irrelevant for fans who should simply focus on the team.

That isn’t to say Young will always be a regular starter after new signings arrive this summer but a player with Young’s versatility is always needed in any great team as the likes of John O’Shea have shown.
