Phil Jones returns from injury and plays for Manchester United’s U21s

Louis van Gaal has been given a defensive boost ahead of Manchester United’s game against Crystal Palace at the weekend thanks to the return of Phil Jones from injury.

Jones played for the U21s last night in their 1-0 win over Southampton, grabbed a fantastic assist for Ashley Fletcher with a raking pass and completed 60 minutes before being taken off in what was likely to be a planned substitution in order to help with his recovery and rehabilitation.

The 23-year-old hasn’t featured for United since the 4-2 win over Manchester City on April 12 and Paddy McNair has been drafted into the first-team in Jones’ and Marcos Rojo‘s absence through injury.

Although McNair has done well since coming back into the starting XI, van Gaal will be happy to see Jones’ pushing forward with his rehabilitation depending on how his recovery goes this week, Jones may yet play against Crystal Palace at the weekend.

Jones started four consecutive Premier League games prior to suffering a new injury and it will be interesting to see if van Gaal brings him straight into the starting XI if available or whether he is happy to continue playing McNair alongside Chris Smalling.
