Southampton manager Ronald Koeman believes new Manchester United signing Memphis Depay may struggle to adapt to the “tough” Premier League next season.

PSV Eindhoven and Man United announced they had reached an agreement over the transfer of Depay on Thursday, bringing to an end months of speculation.

The 21-year-old is considered to be one of the brightest young talents in the world and the signing has received widespread praise from fans.

However, Koeman warned Depay that he must be prepared to adapt physically and mentally to life in England.

Speaking about the transfer, Koeman said: ”For him it’s a fantastic move. He has had a great season and last season made the step up to be a senior player, not a junior player.

“He still has to develop himself. It will be tough for him because the Premier League is tough in a physical and mental way.

“It’s a big step for him. But he’s a great talent, a fast player and a very good signing for Manchester United.”

United will certainly need to use Depay in the right way, especially in the early part of his career at Old Trafford.

Although he has bags of potential, the Dutchman is still in the very early stages of his development. United and Louis van Gaal would be wise not to throw him in at the deep end straight away despite the excitement surrounding his arrival. Once he has settled in, Depay has all the attributes to make himself a huge success at the club.
