Manchester United were always going to have a new look starting XI next season.
Louis van Gaal‘s £150m spend last summer was the tip of the iceberg in terms of creating a squad he felt was good enough to challenge for trophies on all fronts.
Now, before the season has even finished, the first piece of the new jigsaw has been added in PSV Eindhoven winger Memphis Depay.
The 21-year-old was widely expected to be one of Man United’s first signings this year and so it has proved. Van Gaal’s preferred formation of 4-3-3 now looks that bit stronger as Depay is the perfect player to use in it as his pace and goalscoring threat make him the perfect focal point of any counter-attack, much like Angel di Maria.
Already, United’s team looks that much better. Ashley Young has been fantastic this year but is rather one dimensional in comparison to Depay and that unpredictability is an attacker’s greatest asset because a defender simply doesn’t know how to stop them.
Next year is going to be all about squad strength if United will compete on all front again and bringing Depay in not only strengthens the starting XI but makes the bench stronger.
