It isn’t just regular Manchester United fans who are getting excited about the signing of Memphis Depay.
As both a United fan and a pundit, Gary Neville is excited to see what Depay can do at Man United.
Speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, Neville analysed Depay’s strengths as a winger and highlighted how he is a far from one dimensional player.
Mostly, Neville picked up and analysed the intelligence of Depay; the well timed runs to beat defenders, the runs in space behind to stretch the defence and his overall movement. For a 21-year-old, he has great awareness.
Speaking about Depay, Neville said: “I’m excited obviously as a United fan in the sense that you see wing players.
“Manchester United, for me, should play with wingers. Wingers who beat people, players who take people on and put crosses in the box, who score goals and he [Depay] is exciting.
“I think that is required because in wide areas this season it has been a bit of a struggle at times.”
As good as Ashley Young has been this season, the thought of Angel di Maria and Depay tearing up both wings is enough to make most United fans weak at the knees.
Next year, we’re going to see the real Louis van Gaal philosophy pushing through into a squad he has built and taught for a year. All in all, it’s going to be exciting no matter what.
