Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie and Luke Shaw all return to Manchester United training – report

Wayne Rooney and Luke Shaw have both been cleared to take part in training having overcome their injury scares from the weekend.

Robin van Persie is also going to return to action after recovering from a virus which kept him out of the Crystal Palace game.

The Telegraph reports the trio will all be back in training this week and that gives Louis van Gaal a real boost ahead of an Arsenal game which may now have some meaning.

When fit, Rooney and Shaw are certain members of Van Gaal’s starting XI. As for Van Persie, it will be interesting to see if the Dutch striker starts against his former club if he is available for selection.

United’s excellent run of six consecutive wins came at a time where injuries were kept to a minimum but as soon as those problems re-appeared, that form went out of the window and it’s a problem which has to be solved with new signings in the summer if United are to compete on all fronts.

Sunday’s game may well have taken on a slightly bigger importance as well. Following Arsenal’s defeat to Swansea, the distant possibility of a third place finish in the Premier League now exists and a win on Sunday would certainly make it an interesting end to the season for Arsenal who still have two more fixtures to play.
