Fans’ view: Who can make the step up from the U21s to the Manchester United first-team?

by Ben Topliss

Manchester United U21s recorded a resounding 4-0 victory over Manchester City on Tuesday in front of 17,000 fans at Old Trafford.

The result, courtesy of goals from James Wilson, Adnan Januzaj, Matty Willock and Ashley Fletcher, will fill fans with confidence heading into the future.

Their performances will also give Louis van Gaal plenty of food for thought as he prepares for the next campaign.

We asked our Twitter followers who they think can make the step up to the first-team next season:

Tom Thorpe is the player who fans feel has to get his chance sooner rather than later following a number of impressive displays.

There are a number of supporters who rate the 22-year-old higher than Tyler Blackett and Paddy McNair but he doesn’t appear to have caught the eye of van Gaal.

Unfortunately, United were in need of a left-footed centre-back earlier in the season and Thorpe is less suited to the role than Blackett. It remains to be seen if he will finally be given an opportunity, particularly as United continue to be linked to the likes of Mats Hummels.
