New Manchester United signing Memphis Depay is hopeful he can one day become as good as Cristiano Ronaldo.
Like Depay, Ronaldo joined Man United as a youngster with raw talent before going on to become one of the world’s best players.
Ronaldo eventually joined Real Madrid in 2009 and is on course to become their highest ever goalscorer having scored more than 50 goals in a season for five consecutive years.
Depay admitted there are similarities between him and Ronaldo and insisted he is determined to reach the same level as him.
When asked about Ronaldo, Depay said: “I heard people compare me to Cristiano Ronaldo,”
“It’s great to hear other people say that but I’m still 21 and I hope one day I can reach the level of Cristiano Ronaldo.
“I’m the same player as him in style and he’s a big hero for me. He scored so many goals and I have to fight to be the same.”
Ronaldo is one of the greatest players to have ever played the game so it may be asking a little too much for Depay to hit those heights.
However, the 21-year-old certainly has the ability and confidence to be as good as he wants to be.
Ronaldo worked relentlessly to get where he is and Depay will have to do the same in order to realise his potential and if Depay can have half the impact at Old Trafford than Ronaldo did, it will be money well spent by the club.
