Manchester United have offered David de Gea a new contract worth £200,000 per week but the Spanish goalkeeper has refused to sign it, reports Andy Mitten.
With only two games remaining in the Premier League season, negotiations for a new deal with De Gea have been a long and arduous process.
De Gea’s current deal expires next summer and United were keen for him to commit his future to the club by signing a new contract.
However, Mitten suggests De Gea has refused to sign a deal worth £200,000 a week and if that is indeed the case then no amount of money will keep him at Old Trafford past this summer.
Writing in his latest column for Eurosport, Mitten said: “Manchester United have offered him a contract which will make him the best paid goalkeeper in the world, right up with Iker Casillas, the man he’s set to replace. Despite it being four times the £50,000 a week he’s currently on, despite the pound being 20% stronger against the Euro than a year ago, the 24-year-old has refused to sign it.”
De Gea returning to Madrid at some point in his career was an inevitability rather than a probability but United fans are desperate for him to stay as long as possible. After all, he has transformed himself from a meek boy into one of the world’s best goalkeepers thanks to his time at the club.
It remains to be seen whether De Gea does indeed sign a new contract but everything is slowly pointing towards an exit for him this summer and with the transfer window fast approaching, it’s going to be more of a surprise than anything if De.
