Manchester United defender Luke Shaw has said he was “really happy” when Louis van Gaal publicly declared his faith in the 19-year-old but admitted he has struggled because of the amount of injuris he has had.
Van Gaal revealed he “believes” in Shaw last month, despite the fact that he has suffered from a number of injuries.
The youngster’s frustrating season continued last weekend after he was stretched off at Selhurst Park in the game against Crystal Palace.
It would be easy for Shaw to get downhearted about the situation but he insisted the backing of van Gaal has given him a boost.
Speaking about the praise, Shaw said: ”I was really happy when I saw the manager had said that about me. Just to know he’s got trust in me is something special and I couldn’t ask for any more.
“With all the injuries, it’s been quite hard. My season hasn’t been the best but not the worst either.”
Shaw’s injury situation is a worry for United fans given the amount of money the club spent on him last summer.
However, the Englishman is still in the very early stages of his development and it is easy to forget that he is just 19. With a full, uninterrupted pre-season under his belt, there is no reason why Shaw cannot push on and cement a regular place in the starting XI next season.
