Manchester United considering Petr Cech as David de Gea replacement – report

by Richard Laverty

Manchester United could be set to make a surprise swoop for Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech, with David De Gea seemingly now set to leave the club.

When news broke on Sunday that De Gea has turned down a new deal at Old Trafford, United supporters around the world speculated about who could replace the man who has kept United in some games single-handedly this season, and Cech’s name has popped up.

After the player’s agent confirmed Chelsea had given the number two permission to talk to any club, despite rumours they would block a move to Arsenal or United, it appears the door has been left open for Cech to move to a direct rival.

Given his current status as back-up at Chelsea, Cech would probably command a lower fee than other targets such as Samir Handanovic and Hugo Lloris, but United could also flex their financial muscle elsewhere and put their trust in Victor Valdes next season.

Valdes arrived in January and has yet to make his debut for the club, but United could employ a similar tactic to Barcelona and use a different goalkeeper in the Champions League from next season.

Louis van Gaal did confirm United would look for a replacement, saying they knew who the next goalkeeper would be, leaving it seemingly impossible for Valdes to become the undisputed number one in August.
