Angel di Maria has made it clear he has no intention to leave Manchester United in the summer and is very keen to make himself part of the club’s history.
The Argentinian has endured a tough first season at the club. Having started with blistering form, he went off the boil and suffered a succession of injuries, as well as getting his house burgled, all of which made it difficult for him to feel completely settled.
“I’m not happy with my first year in England,” he said.
“I moved here from Real to win titles and this season has been very bad for me. I’m frustrated because I want to do better.
“The fans in England have not seen the real Di Maria. I know I can offer a better level. This year was not good enough.
“Adapting to English football is not easy. People told me the first year for a foreigner here is hard. And that’s true.
“My challenge is not for one year, but to become part of the history of Manchester United.
“The stadium is unique, the fans sensational – it is a fantastic club. My only frustration is that we haven’t offered the fans our best face every week. My dream at United is still to win the Premier League and Champions League.”
From an objective standpoint, the idea that Man United would be willing to sell their record signing after just one season does seem far-fetched when you consider most foreign players do take a season to settle down properly.
Di Maria sounds very determined to right the wrongs of his first campaign and that sort of verbal commitment will really please fans.
Now that Van Gaal’s squad understands his philosophy and have had a year to settle and gel as a team, there is real excitement building about how Man United could shape up next season and Di Maria may well be a major part of that.
