Louis van Gaal: Manchester United fans must be patient with Memphis Depay

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has called on supporters to be “patient” with new signing Memphis Depay.

The 21-year-old passed his medical at Man United’s Carrington training ground on Monday and the club will make him their first signing of the summer when the transfer window opens.

Memphis is widely considered to be one of the most promising young players in the world and the excitement around him has reached fever pitch as a result.

Van Gaal moved to temper the expectations by insisting it will take time for Memphis to adapt to the Premier League.

Speaking about the signing, Van Gaal said: “Youth is very important to this club and is a very big part of my philosophy as a manager. We have a number of young players in our first-team squad who have benefitted from experiencing first-team football this season and that will help their development going into next season.

Memphis Depay [is] a young player who has come through the PSV Eindhoven academy system. I worked with Memphis during last summer’s World Cup with the Netherlands and he has great potential.

“The plan is to help him develop as a player, but we must all be patient. The Premier League is very different from any other league and it will take time for him to fully adapt to the pace and unforgiving nature of football in this country.”

Van Gaal is absolutely right that fans shouldn’t expect too much, too early from Memphis early on in his Old Trafford career.

He undoubtedly has the ability to become one of the world’s best but it will take time for him to realise his potential. When he does finally settle in, supporters can expect goals and plenty of them.
