Van der Gouw knows all about what it means to be a No.2 goalkeeper at Man United as he wasn’t able to replace Peter Schmeichel when he left the club.
Valdes made his debut for Man United off the bench against Arsenal having spent the last four months training with the club and rehabilitating his own injury problems.
Having been schooled at Barcelona, Valdes is accustomed to playing with the ball at his feet and Van der Gouw feels he is perfect for how United play under Louis van Gaal.
“With what he knows about football and the way he is playing, he is perfect for United,” Van der Gouw told BBC Sport.
“He can play for another three or four years in a top team.
With Valdes already at the club and plenty of funds at his disposal, Van Gaal would be able to find a strong replacement immediately but the hope still remains that the need to find a new goalkeeper never arises and De Gea stays at United.
