Louis van Gaal‘s amazing speech at the end of Manchester United’s annual awards might have taken the headline but let’s not forget what the whole night was about.
David de Gea walked away with the Players’ and Fans’ Player of the Year awards for the second year in succession and deservedly so.
For the last two years, De Gea has been Man United’s stand-out performer and this season in particular he has been individually responsible for so many points on route to securing a top four spot.
Louis van Gaal said he was very proud of De Gea when presenting the award and so far the fans because in the four years he has been at the club, he has grown into one of the world’s best goalkeepers.
Fellow Spaniard Juan Mata also won the Goal of the Season award for his wonderful overhead kick against Liverpool. Angel di Maria’s lob against Leicester City would have won the award but Mata’s goal at Anfield will go down as one of the all-time greats and deserved to be recognised.
Andreas Pereira was named the Denzil Haroun U21s Player of the Year but as he is away on international duty with Brazil’s U20s at the moment, he wasn’t able to pick up his award.
Finally, Axel Tuanzebe was given the prestigious Jimmy Murphy Academy Player of the Year award. The U18s captain was a deserving winner having been a rock at the back alongside RoShaun Williams for Paul McGuinness’ side and will now be looking to make the step up to U21s next year.
