Rooney, Jones and Smalling in England squad but Young left out due to injury

Manchester United have had three players called up to the England squad to play in a friendly against Republic of Ireland and a Euro 2016 Qualifier against Slovenia in June.

Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Wayne Rooney will all be part of England’s squad but Michael Carrick and most notably Ashley Young has been left out of the squad.

Fans were furious to see Young left out of the squad after what has been a fantastic season with Man United but Roy Hodgson has said the winger has a ‘minor medical issue’ which needs to be treated this summer.

“Medical department at Manchester United informed us he has a minor issue that needs clearing up and needs the summer (for treatment),” said Hodgson.

Ashley Young

England’s loss is United’s gain and although both Carrick and Young deserved their places in the squad, injuries mean they will be able to rest this summer ahead of what is sure to be an exhausting pre-season tour.

Young was rightly left out of previous England squads after what was some terrible form for United but this season he has shown a level of consistency and quality which few thought he could show in a United shirt.

If he wasn’t injured, Young should be one of the first names in Hodgson’s squad and if he can build on what has been a very successful campaign, he can be an important player for both United and England in the future.
