Manchester United in strongest position to sign Dani Alves – report

Manchester United’s search for a right-back has already seen the club linked with the likes of Dani Alves, Nathaniel Clyne and Dani Carvajal in the early stages of the transfer window.

If reports from The Guardian are correct, it is the former who Louis van Gaal is in the strongest position to sign this summer.

Alves will be available on a free transfer this summer if he isn’t able to agree on a new contract with Barcelona so wouldn’t take anything out of Van Gaal’s transfer budget but would certainly command high wages.

If Barcelona win the Champions League final at the weekend, they will secure the treble which would put Alves in the strongest possible negotiation position in the summer window.

On paper, Alves is far from a long-term right-back given that he is already 32 and United usually sign players a lot younger than that but in terms of an expected Van Gaal three-year cycle, is it a signing which would make sense?

Alves has certainly had a better season at Barcelona and would bring a wealth of experience to United’s defence which is something it lacks since Rio Ferdinand, Patrice Evra and Nemanja Vidic departed.

That being said, Van Gaal chose not to play Rafael all year even when he was fit and instead chose to use the disciplined Antonio Valencia instead, so maybe he isn’t too fond a defender like Alves whose first priority is to attack.
