Memphis Depay has revealed he went against the wishes of Manchester United by playing in PSV Eindhoven’s final two league matches of the season.
Man United and PSV reached an agreement over the transfer of the player before the end of the Dutch side’s campaign.
United asked Memphis to sit out the final two games in order to avoid the possibility of injury but the 21-year-old played in them anyway.
Memphis revealed he turned out for PSV as he wanted to finish the season as the league’s top scorer.
Speaking about the situation, Memphis said: “I really wanted to play and for our coach (Phillip Cocu) it was not a big issue.
“But PSV and Manchester United were not pleased. They both suggested that I sit out because of fear over injuries.”
Although Memphis acted a little recklessly in risking his fitness, the episode goes to show just how determined he is to be the best.
It bodes well for his career at United as Louis van Gaal will accept nothing less than perfection. Hopefully Memphis is the first of many arrivals at Old Trafford as United continue to be linked with the likes of Gareth Bale, Ilkay Gundogan and Paul Pogba.
