Manchester United have missed out on the signing of Fabian Schar as the Swiss defender has agreed a deal with German side Hoffenheim.
Schar attracted attention from a whole host of Premier League Clubs this season and Man United in particular were heavily linked with a move for him back in January
The highly coveted centre-half has been ever present for Paolo Sousa’s side as they claimed the Swiss title but it was his performances in the Champions League which turned the heads of England’s elite.
However, the ambitious Bundesliga side have now secured his signing, for the bargain price of around £5m.
The Hoffenheim director of football, Alexander Rosen, was clearly delighted by the Swiss international’s acquisition: “There is a young, ambitious team here and a perfect infrastructure.
“Schar’s build-up play is very good and he is someone who has already been able to gain international experience at a young age, yet still has plenty of potential. We have taken another step forward in our squad planning with the signing of Fabian Schar.
“For him to sign for Hoffenheim is certainly confirmation of the great work we are doing here.”
Ed Woodward will now turn his attention elsewhere. It is well known that United are in the market for at least one top quality centre-half this summer and the club have been linked with a host of top names including Nicholas Otamendi and Borussia Dortmund’s World Cup winner Mats Hummels.
