Angel di Maria: I’m staying at Manchester United

Angel di Maria is focused on the upcoming Copa America tournament this summer but has made it clear he will be returning to Manchester United next year.

The Argentinian has been subject to lots of speculation linking him with a move to Paris St Germain after what was an underwhelming first year as a Man United player.

Despite the frustration of a poor first season having joined for £59.7m from Real Madrid, Di Maria has no intention of leaving but knows he needs to improve and adapt.

“I have just finished my first season playing for Manchester United,” he said.

“Now I will play the Copa America and then I will move back to Manchester for next season and do my best there.

“It was a hard season for me. I think it was hard because it was another country and another league, and this league is harder than the Spanish one.

“So, I couldn’t adapt myself as I wanted to. La Liga and the Premier League are completely different. The Premier League is physically stronger.

“It was not easy at all. I ended playing few minutes. Under [manager Louis] Van Gaal I played in lots of positions until he decided to bench me.

“I think I did a good job, though. I finished second in assists and I scored some goals, so I definitely think I did well in my first season at Manchester United.”

Di Maria knows full well that his first season wasn’t as good as he would have wanted it to but as is the case with lots of foreign imports, he struggled with the physical nature of the Premier League.

He isn’t the first player to struggle and he won’t be the last but what he needs to do this summer is toughen up because next year won’t be any easier.

Everybody knows Di Maria is a genuine world class player and we saw bits of that at the start last year. His job now is to make sure he can find that sort of form on a consistent basis and if he can do that, he’ll light the Premier League up.
