Aymeric Laporte signs contract extension at Athletic Club with €50m release clause

Athletic Bilbao defender Aymeric Laporte has signed a new contract which will keep him at the Basque club until 2019.

The 21-year-old defender now has a €50m buy-out clause which means any club who want to sign him without having to deal with Bilbao have to pay that price.

Manchester United have long been linked with Laporte in the past but this new contract means Louis van Gaal will have to pay a real premium to sign the talented youngster.

Although he is only 21, Laporte is an extremely accomplished player and no defender made more interceptions than him in the 2014/15 La Liga season, which is a testament to how good he is already.

From United’s perspective, €50m is well within their budget and as we found out with Ander Herrera, there is no point in trying to negotiate a deal with the Basque club because they are so keen to hold onto their players.

Laporte isn’t one of the names who has been mentioned as a potential target for Louis van Gaal this summer but he’s going to be one of the best defenders in Europe if he can continue improving as a player, so he’ll no doubt be linked to Man United again in the not so distant future.
